Have you ever wondered how a river reacts to certain management techniques such as dredging, armoring, or to a flood?  Come to this engaging presentation about river dynamics on Tuesday, June 19th.  A river flume demonstrates the natural physical processes of rivers and streams.  Staci Pomeroy, River Resource Scientist from the Agency of Natural Resources, will set up this river model.  The type of questions the flume demonstration will show include how the river interacts with the landforms around it, how rivers move across their floodplain over time, and how river management practices affect the river and the surrounding lands.  Bank armoring, such as using stone, can have effects over time either upstream and/or downstream from the location where armoring is performed.  Undersized culverts also often cause undesirable effects, predominately downstream.  It is her hope that as we make decisions about river management that we will consider the natural movements of the river, and try to make good, informed decisions if conflicts around river management arise.

Date: Thursday, June 21st at 7pm
Location:  Jay Community Center
Monthly Wild and Scenic Study Committee Meeting – all are welcome!

Date: Saturday, June 30th
Location:  Orleans County
Wild and Scenic Paddle in partnership with Montgomery Adventures
Come see why the Missisquoi is a Wild and Scenic River!  Please contact Shana, and let her know if you are interested in attending this paddle.  Specific location and time will be set closer to the date as we see the river levels.  Typically folks provide their own boats, but we may be able to arrange something if you need one.  Please bring your own picnic lunch, we will stop and eat together.

Hope to see you for one or more of these events.  Please contact us with any questions: info(at)vtwsr.org.
